Taurus Time: Stop to smell the Roses!

On April 19 at 9:30 PM EDT the Sun ingressed into Taurus. The constellation of Taurus, The Bull is large and prominent in the night sky from November through March (in the Northern Hemisphere) with several bright stars that can be seen by the naked eye. It is one of the most ancient constellations and has a rich and varied mythology among the Greeks, the Babylonians and the Egyptians to name a few.

Many festivals and celebrations take place when the Sun in in Taurus. The Wesak festival takes place during the full Moon to commemorate Buddha’s birthday, enlightenment and ascension. Beltane or May Day was observed in early May when spring was in full bloom. It was a celebration of fertility, the fertility of the Earth as well as human fertility. The survival of human beings depended on fertile land and procreation. Fertility rites were practiced to ensure that the spring planting would produce an abundant crop while couples were encouraged to produce children.

Taurus follows the urgency of Aries and allows us to calm down. We have survived and now we stand strong. While Aries belongs to the Fire Element, Taurus is an Earth sign, concerned with sensuality, all that is experienced and enjoyed through the five senses. Taurus is concerned with satisfying our physical appetites, like the pleasure we experience when we stop to smell the roses.

Taurus is ruled by the planet Venus, the Goddess of Beauty and Love. When we think about The Bull, Venus is not the first image that comes to mind. Many well-known astrologers have explained the connection between Taurus and Venus by having us think about the feminine cow, content to graze and rarely aggressive. You feel the breeze in your hair, are calmed by the sound of the waves, enjoy the warmth of the sun on your skin, the feel of the sand and the smell of the salty air. Because Taurus is an earthy sign it needs to be in natural surroundings away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Periodically evaluating their habits and releasing those that have outlived their usefulness is a healthy routine for Taurus to adopt. That includes re-evaluating the people in their lives as well.

We can’t forget to talk about money. On Wall Street, the financial center of the world, we see The Bull of Wall Street, a large bronze statue that represents the Bull Market, a sign of economic prosperity and financial optimism when stock prices rise and investors get rich. Taurus is practical and seeks stability, including financial stability. However, Taurus can prioritize the purchase of items of comfort and luxury over saving for the future. I have seen Taurus go either way, from being cautious about their finances to splurging on the finer things in life. Taurus likes to indulge the senses. Either way, money is often a top concern. Having strong Taurus influences in the natal chart can give an individual a knack for banking and other financial careers. I myself have Mercury in Taurus and along with other compatible placements that correlate with my 40 year career at JP Morgan Chase in Expense Management.

If you are lucky enough to have a Taurus friend as I do, visiting them in their home is a treat. The surroundings are comfortable and the food is good. You feel pampered and appreciated. Indeed, The Bull is strong, loyal, protective and stands firm when life gets tough.

In Taurus, Venus appreciates life’s simple pleasures; enjoying a good meal, listening to music, massage, taking a walk or feeling soft cool sheets on the skin. Taurus enjoys comfort and luxury because the physical sensations simply feel good, like a sigh. Life gets pretty complicated and stressful and Taurus takes us back to the basics so that we can relax . Taurus shows up for each of us. On March 20 at 10:46 am EDT the Sun ingressed (entered) into Aries, the first sign of the zodiac. This event marks the start of the astrological New Year. The Aries Point is the first degree of the 360 degree zodiac and occurs at the vernal equinox each year, when day and night are equal in length. It represents beginnings, initiations and a much anticipated reset as we say goodbye to Winter.

Spring brings new life. The tender shoots of new flowers emerge, trees begin to bud, baby animals and birds are being born. Their eyes are closed. They can’t feed themselves. They are vulnerable to predators, unable to defend themselves. Survival is uncertain. Aries is the sign of the Warrior . The connection between fragile new life and the Aries warrior archetype provides the basis for our understanding of the first sign of the zodiac.

New Life bursts forth boldly, despite all of the threats to its existence. Aries is concerned with survival and finding the courage to claim your right to exist, to take up space. It’s not easy being among predators who look at you as their next meal. The world can be a dangerous and scary place. New life faces an environment that is challenging and in order to survive you need some grit.

Aries knows the value of competition . The kitten begins life assertively claiming his share of milk from Mom. He pushes his brothers and sisters aside, and as they push back, the entire litter becomes stronger as they engage in healthy competition. Next, momma cat teaches her brood how to hunt. The kittens practice learning this behavior through play. Before long the poor baby bird who didn’t learn to fly becomes the cat’s prey. Survival is not always pretty. It can be harsh and those who learn to take care of themselves survive. Aries knows this. Often, survival depends upon being competitive. There are 2 dogs and only one bone. (Steven Forrest) Aries shows us where we need to stand our ground, be assertive and where we may encounter stressful circumstances that require us to act with courage. They understand that in order to have the strength to take care of others, they must first take care of themselves. Every pre-flight instruction reminds us to first put on our own oxygen mask before assisting others.

With Aries, the element of stress is present. The evolutionary intent is to develop courage so Aries tends to attract experiences that require bravery. Think of the firefighter rushing into a burning building to save lives. This heroic act requires impulsiveness. When faced with a crisis, Aries acts. They may fall apart afterwards however, in the moment, they control their fear and leap into action. Aries takes the initiative giving the sign a talent for leadership.

When we talk about any sign of the zodiac, its expression is not limited to the Sun sign alone. We all have Aries somewhere in our charts. Aries is ruled by the planet Mars. Mars brings energy, passion and a boost of adrenaline to help us function in times of stress. And it will be a whole lot scarier than a mere airplane flight. One way or another you are required to be brave. You can’t run away from it. Far better to choose to overcome a fear than to have a scary and stressful encounter thrust upon you.

A poor response to Aries can result in selfishness, folly, succumbing to fear, making enemies, uncontrolled temper, violence, unwilling to compromise, always wanting to get their own way, excessive use of force and bullying.

Even if we are not born under the Sun sign of Aries, the Warrior lies somewhere in our natal chart. We look to see the placement of Mars by sign and by house. Is your Mars in Gemini? You may defend yourself with words. In Scorpio, Mars seeks deep connections with others by being brave enough to tell the unvarnished truth. On February 18 at 10:52 am EST the Sun ingressed (entered) into Pisces, the last sign of the zodiac. The Sun stays in the sign of Pisces until the first day of spring. It’s the end of winter, and we start looking forward to spring, especially this year when so many of us have endured an extra cold and snowy winter.

Pisces, by element, is a water sign sensitive and imaginative. We can begin to understand Pisces when we think of the vastness of the oceans into which our rivers flow. More than any other sign, Pisces relates deeply to others because it contains a little bit of every sign of the zodiac. It has also been referred to as the trashcan of the zodiac. While every sign has its challenges in equal measure, let’s start with the high ground.

Because Pisces tends to dissolve the ego, it understands that we transcend the physical world and are part of a higher state of consciousness. Pisces sees itself as an integral part of the tapestry of the cosmos. For these reasons Pisces is associated with spirituality and psychic ability. It is the sign of the visionary. By looking inward, its power of intuition creates the dreams that spark the vision.

The blending of energies gives Pisces a strong sense of empathy . They easily put themselves in the shoes of another. If acting ability is otherwise indicated in the birth chart, these individuals can give an Oscar worthy performance. A really good movie touches us. We can escape from the routine and responsibilities of daily life and be carried away to another place and time. Movies can stir up any emotion; they make us laugh, cry, sit on the edge of our seats, applaud the hero – take your pick. That’s a face of Pisces, one that we need. Oscar season happens when the Sun is in Pisces.

Let’s dive a bit deeper. Pisces is ruled by two planets, Neptune the modern ruler and Jupiter the classical ruler. Neptune’s association with illusion, glamour, fantasy and creativity fits with the image of Hollywood. Stars walk the Red Carpet in all of their finery. Jupiter, the Roman King of the Gods has star power. He glitters and shines. I enjoy the spectacle, imagining myself in a breathtaking gown, dripping diamonds. But we begin to see the slippery slope if we get stuck in that fantasy. All that glitters is not gold – that’s Jupiter too. When we become beguiled with glamour, appearance and image we begin to lose our true identity. That’s the darker side of Pisces that can erode our ego. Not being able to see clearly, being in a fog, confusion – that’s Neptune too. When taken to extremes Pisces can go wrong just like any other sign.

If Pisces over identifies with the pain and suffering of other people the weight becomes too much to bear. It longs for an escape from reality. This is why a weak response to Pisces can lead to substance abuse, moving through life with no clear path, withdrawal, accomplishing nothing, being irresponsible.

Now let’s lighten up and talk about St. Patrick’s Day! The Irish people love folklore complete with Leprechauns (mischievous fairies), shamrocks, lucky four-leaf clovers, and a rainbow with a pot of gold at the end. St. Patty’s Day is celebrated with much revelry; parades, festivals and green beer! We see the Piscean signature of fantasy and imagination. St. Patrick’s story becomes a whimsical tale where reality becomes a little blurry. Some of those who celebrate become a little blurry themselves!

Let’s keep in mind the Piscean theme of spirituality . St. Patrick’s Day is a Holy Day of Obligation for Roman Catholics in Ireland, meaning that Catholics are expected to attend Mass. It commemorates St. Patrick’s conversion of the pagan Irish to Christianity. However, most celebrations are secular and the Lenten restrictions on fasting and drinking alcohol are lifted on March 17 ^th .

King Jupiter loves a party and Neptune (after piously attending the church service) brings the beer! You can’t drink all day if you don’t start in the morning and in many Irish pubs the barstools are filled quite early in the morning! The custom of “drowning the shamrock” marks the end of the day’s celebrations by placing a shamrock at the bottom of a cup, filling it with whiskey or beer to drink a toast to St. Patrick.

With regard to empathy the haunting moving song “Danny Boy” comes to mind. My Dad loved this song so much he named one of my brothers Danny. The lyrics bring a tear to the eye as we relate to a father’s poignant farewell to his son going off to war. I’ll include the lyrics at the end of this post.

King Jupiter is responsible for the “Luck of the Irish”. He optimistic, jolly and adventurous. His quest is to find the end of the rainbow, joyfully claiming his pot of gold.

In closing, when we think of the spirit of the Irish people the following phrases come to mind, infused with the qualities of Pisces, Jupiter and Neptune.

The juxtaposition of reality and fairy tale St. Patrick is credited with driving all of the snakes from Ireland.

Eat, drink and Be Merry AND cry in your beer!
The mysticism of Ireland
Foggy swirling mist of the ancient moors
An optimistic faith in life, in oneself and in community
