Libra and Polarity in the Zodiac

The Sun ingressed into Libra the Scales on September 22, 2026, at 8:05 pm EDT where it will remain until October 22, 2026, at 8:05 pm EDT. Libra is the second Air sign and it’s modality is Cardinal. The Cardinal signs start the seasons. Aries starts on the first day of spring; Cancer kicks off the summer season and Capricorn begins winter. The autumnal equinox signifies the start of Libra. The Cardinal signs represent the axis on the chart wheel and correspond with the directions North, South, East and West as seen in the diagram below.

Unlike signs having the same Element (Fire, Earth, Air, Water), signs having the same modality are not inherently compatible. Their motivations and behaviors are at odds with one another. Aries is straight-forward and direct which may come across as insensitive to Cancer. Aries can hurt Cancer’s feelings when they fail to realize the impact of their words or actions on the emotional Crab. They are left wondering why they are getting the silent treatment. From Aries’ perspective, they don’t have the time or the inclination to walk on eggshells. From Cancer’s perspective Aries lacks emotional intelligence and needs to learn the art of being tactful.

Here’s an example: Cancer: “Do you like my new dress?” Aries: “That dress does nothing for you. The color is dreadful and it’s two sizes too small. I hope you haven’t thrown away the sales receipt.” Cancer: “Why am I friends with you, you’re so mean?!” (sniff, sniff) Aries: Well, you shouldn’t have asked me if you didn’t actually want my opinion.” Cancer: “It’s not what you say it’s how you say it.”

Signs of the same modality rub each other the wrong way. When they come together, the lesson is to learn how to get along when it doesn’t come naturally, when you have to put some work into it. Signs having the same Element can form a Trine aspect which is harmonious, while signs having the same modality can form a Square aspect which requires effort but can lead to growth.

Libra is the first sign of the back end of the zodiac. Like the spring equinox, the autumnal equinox represents the time of year when the days and nights are equal in length. In the diagram below, the horizontal axis splits the zodiac in two. Aries through Virgo is on the bottom of the wheel and Libra through Pisces is on the top. The houses (pie slices) are color coded. You can see that the sections having of the same color are opposite one another on the wheel. This polarity affects both the signs and the houses. Aries has polarity with Libra and the first House has polarity with the seventh house. They are 180 degrees apart. The intent is to develop perspective by working through the tension of the opposition. It asks for compromise and understanding.t alady know about the seventh sign

Think about these polarities:

·      Aries is the self, Libra is others/relationships

·      Taurus wants simplicity and to be calm, Scorpio explores complexity and is intense.

·      Gemini asks questions and rules early education, Sagittarius provides answers and rules higher education

·      Cancer is family, Capricorn is the outside world

·      Leo seeks validation and acceptance, Aquarius seeks freedom and individuality

·      Virgo is practical, Pisces is imaginative

As I have said in previous posts, no one sign is better than another, although we may have a personal preference. (Libra is one on my favorites). Each sign has its positive expressions as well as its shadow expressions. This is where polarity helps us out. The high road of a sign curbs the excess of the opposite sign. And it works both ways. Since it’s Libra time, we will use the polarity between Aries and Libra as an example.

As seen on the chart, Libra is opposite Aries. Aries shadows are: hot headed anger, being unwilling to compromise, fighting and even violence. Aries is ruled by Mars, the God of War. Libra is ruled by Venus, the Goddess of Beauty and Love. The polarity is War and Peace. To end war and achieve peace the qualities of Libra are needed, justice, fairness, cooperation, compromise, valuing the relationship, considering the needs of the other person. Libra is represented by the Scales of Justice. Compromise is its strong suit.

On the other hand, Libra’s shadows are: indecisiveness, sweeping issues under the rug, being non-confrontational when the air needs to be cleared. Covering up the ugliness rather than dealing with it. A wife turns a blind eye to her husband’s infidelity. She suffers in silence and it slowly erodes away her self-worth and her confidence. The remedy lies in the sign of Aries. Once she stands up for her right to expect fidelity in her marriage her courage will help her to confront her husband about his betrayal. Let the chips fall where they may, it’s healthier than burying the hurt and pretending all is well.

Many of us know that Libra prioritizes relationship, fairness and aesthetics. Libra is diplomatic, sees both sides of the argument. This is because Libra understands paradox. Should I tell the truth or should I tell a little white lie to avoid hurting your feelings? Reconciling these two seemingly opposite points of view is what Libra is meant to learn and to master. But that’s not all. Let’s explore some other evolutionary goals for Libra. NOTE: These are the most common expressions and represent an array of possibilities. Your personal experience may vary. This is the astrologer considers and integrates the most impactful planetary and house placements when interpreting the birth chart.)

We will start with the planetary ruler of Libra, Venus. (Venus also rules Taurus. In my May post I explain how Taurus embodies Venus) The goddess of Love is meant to attract. Strong Venus placement in a natal chart may result in physical beauty. That’s one way to attract people but certainly not the only way and Libra pulls out all the stops! They are polite, gracious, have good manners, are good listeners and overall are socially savvy. Libra wants to put its best foot forward; to look aesthetically pleasing; to be graceful. They can catch you eye by the way the dress and carry themselves. Popularity provides more opportunity to connect with other people - which is the entire point – to determine who is worthy of their love and trust. It’s a process of selection. Steven Forrest explains how it works: “Not you, not you, not you, YOU!”  Libra is meant to learn trust and discernment in relationship. Trial and error teach them this lesson. Libra has been accused of being fickle. Understanding its evolutionary intent brings the realization that Libra needs to undergo a process of elimination which can be perceived as being fickle. They try out, test and evaluate to ascertain who can be trusted.

Another evolutionary intent for Libra is be peaceful.  Being diplomatic, finding compromise and understanding paradox helps Libra to promote peace. Aesthetics also plays a big role in helping Libra to be calm. Immersion in the arts washes away the stress of the day. Libra’s appreciation for beauty soothes their souls. Having beautiful surroundings is another Libra signature. The intent is to create serenity. Coming home to a visually pleasing environment feels like a sigh of relief at the end of a long day especially if Libra rules the fourth house of Home and Family or if planets in Libra are placed in that house.

Libra embraces harmony in all forms: in relationship, in the value placed on balance and fairness, in the reconciliation of paradox, in the beauty created by harmonious music and artwork.

Barbara Walters has Sun in Libra on her Libra Ascendant. Both Mercury and Mars are in Libra as well. She is the best interviewer on the planet. Let’s break it down. Mars is assertive and Barbara Walters is certainly assertive; she lands interviews with people who won’t talk to anyone else. With Mars in Libra, her assertiveness is non-threatening. With Libra on the Ascendant people see her as understanding, honest and fair. When she speaks (Mercury) she puts people at ease; they trust her. She has the courage (Mars) to ask tough questions and does it in a way that is not offensive. People trust that she will portray then in a fair, unbiased light. Barbara Walters attracts other people because her demeanor is respectful, she is poised, polished and inviting.

As a Libra Moon person I hoped you have enjoyed this post and have learned something you did not already know about the seventh sign of the Zodiac.
