Time to Roar and Two Cancer Princes

The Sun ingressed into Leo the Lion on July 22, 2026 at 3:13pm EDT where it will remain until  August 22 at 10:19pm EDT. So far, I have posted about the first sign in each element:

Aires – Fire,  Taurus – Earth,  Gemini – Air, Cancer – Water. Now the pattern repeats starting with Leo the Lion, the second Fire sign.

Before we jump into understanding the Lion I am reminded that Prince George turned 13 years of age on July 22. The future King of England is a Cancer Sun sign. He was born at 4:24 pm GMT. Had he been born just 32 minutes later at 4:56pm he would have been a Leo Sun sign. At the time of his birth, the Sun was in the last degree of Cancer (29 degrees). In my post “Being Born at the Critical Degree”, I explain that the exact date and time the Sun exits one sign and enters the net sign wiggles a bit year to year and that people born on the same day can have different Sun signs.

The Lion is the King of the Jungle and the archetype of Leo is the King or the Queen. Should we lament the fact the Prince George was born under the sign of Cancer? Certainly not! We are born with the chart we are meant to have. Prince George’s father, Prince William and his grandmother, Princess Diana were both born with the Sun in Cancer. Fun Facts: Prince William is also born at a critical degree. At the time of his birth at 9:03pm GMT, the Sun was in the first degree of Cancer. (0 degrees) Had he been born two hours 40 minutes earlier Prince William would have had Sun in Gemini. Princess Diana was also a Cancer Sun, so we see three generations, mother, son, grandson, with the same Sun sign. Before we explore the sign of Leo, let’s compare these two Princes who are destined to become Kings. How are they similar and how are they different?

Prince William was born under a New Moon. His son, Prince George was born under the full Moon (like his mother, Princess Kate). During the New Moon phase, the Sun and the Moon are close to one another and in the same sign. During the Full Moon phase Sun and Moon are in opposite signs. Prince William has Sun/Moon conjunct in Cancer and George has Sun/Moon in opposition with his Sun in Cancer and his Moon in Capricorn.

The Moon rules the sign of Cancer. Prince William’s deep appreciation of his roots, his devotion to his family and his fierce protection of their privacy are Cancerian qualities that are amplified when both luminaries are placed in this sign. William’s influence is growing, giving us a glimpse into how his Sun/Moon operates on the world stage. He has officially stripped his Uncle Andrew of all of his royal titles, essentially removing him from the family in order to protect the reputation and legacy of the monarchy. Cancer is an emotional sign, in touch with feelings and William is well known for his advocacy of mental health awareness. He seems approachable and relatable. The New Moon phase is characterized by charisma born from the darkest, most mysterious phase of the Moon. During the New Moon seeds are planted but they are still underground, germinating. We await the birth of something new. That “something” is taking shape but is still unformed. We feel excitement wondering what the future will bring, anticipating a fresh start that is full of promise. People easily envision William as King. They are anxious for him to ascend to the throne. The feeling is out with the old in with the new. For some time, speculation of King Charles’ abdication has been whispered. I doubt that will happen in any official capacity; however, we see Prince William stepping up and making major decisions for the monarchy and these responsibilities will continue to increase for him.

Prince George is born under the Full Moon, the brightest phase. He will be left with the legacy created by his father’s rule. It will be his job to evaluate all of the complexities and entanglements that naturally arise when the seed planted during the New Moon reaches full bloom, completely visible, no longer a vision. With his Moon in practical and goal oriented Capricorn my guess is that George will run with what his father started - all the way to the finish line! He has what it takes to make his mark on the world. Through hard work, discipline and commitment to excellence his own accomplishments can be meaningful and concrete when he demonstrates integrity. Btw his mother, Princess Kate is a Capricorn Sun with a Cancer Moon. Her influence is strong and I expect he will honor her legacy as Queen. Both of his parents provide him with the desire to make the world a better place.

Now on to Leo the Lion! When we think about this fifth sign of the zodiac we imagine the King of the Jungle, the extroverted leader of the pack who throws lavish parties, impressing all who attend. While that description can be accurate is can also be misleading. The word that comes to my mind for Leo is dignity which can be loud but can also be quiet.  We expect the Lion to have his/her act together, navigating easily through life’s challenges. The Sun rules Leo and we can be blinded by its brightness, so this sign can easily be misunderstood. If Leo clings too tightly to a royal image, imposed upon him by others, he suffers. The need is to be authentic. If you have come into this world as a Leo, you were rejected in some way by others in a prior life. You need some acceptance, some fun and most of all joy in your life to heal your soul.

The evolutionary intent of Leo is to express their inner world by being vulnerable. Leo seeks self-expression, approval and recognition. In the same way a child blossoms when they are appreciated and praised, being seen and accepted for who they truly are feeds the Lion’s soul and unlocks a reservoir of joy and generosity. Because Leo enjoys the spotlight and can thrive there, the caution is not to value applause over genuine self-expression.

Leo and the Sun have a lot to do with the development of a healthy ego - not over-inflated, not lacking in confidence. When the ego is unbalanced Leo may behave as if others orbit around them, becoming pompous, boastful and prideful. A misguided an attempt to build confidence can manifest as “look at me”, always wanting to be the center of attention. Leo can be overly sensitive to criticism, real or perceived. Or Leo can fail to reveal himself to others and play a role that does not feel right, doesn’t fit, resulting in much unhappiness. These are shadow expressions and while I don’t ignore them, when giving a reading to a client it’s important to emphasize the high road and to provide encouragement and validation. Leo has such beautiful energy and we can feel like we are basking in the warmth of the Sun when Leo shines!

Leo is a Fixed Fire sign. Fixed refers to the sign’s Quality or Modality. Those qualities are: Cardinal, Fixed and Mutable. Signs that start each season are Cardinal (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn); signs in the middle of each season are Fixed (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius); signs that end each season are Mutable (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces).  Cardinal signs create. Fixed signs sustain. Mutable signs adapt.

It is hard for Fixed signs to change their minds or to budge from their values or ideals. However, they are loyal and steadfast. They often make good managers since they know how to keep things running smoothly.

Signs that have the same Quality or Modality don’t see eye to eye with one another. They struggle a bit to work together and to find common ground. When they interact, we see challenges, tension and friction but we also find motivation to work it out. When interpreting the birth chart, we look for these connections, called Hard Aspects. Let’s look at some Fixed hard aspects:

Leo and Scorpio, the Square: There is friction between Leo’s need for self-expression and Scorpio’s need for privacy. Leo wants to be in the spotlight while Scorpio prefers to remain behind the scenes. The evolutionary intent for Leo is to express their inner world while the evolutionary intent for Scorpio is to understand life’s raw realities. Authentic, vulnerable self-expression is Leo’s path. Scorpio finds it hard to trust and can be suspicious. Individual lessons vary, but in general, Scorpio can help Leo take a deep dive into their inner psyche and find the courage to express itself in a way that is a genuine reflection of themselves. Leo helps Scorpio to lighten up and become less wary of others to more fully engage with the world.

Leo and Aquarius, the Opposition: Aquarius is all about individuation and freedom. Its motto is “I’ve gotta be me!” Aquarians are not meant to conform to the expectations of society or to be pressured to behave like everyone else. Leo’s need for approval and validation conflicts with the more rebellious nature of Aquarius who is less concerned with the opinions of others. These two signs are like heads and tails; same coin, different sides. Aquarius prefers group settings, organizations and teams while Leo tends to be a solo player. Aquarius can help Leo learn to value genuine self-expression over applause while Leo can help Aquarius learn to avoid blind idealism or throwing the baby out with the bath water.

Leo and Taurus, the Square: Taurus the Bull seeks peace and stability. They like their world to be uncomplicated and predictable. The evolutionary intent for Taurus is to calm down. Being in the spotlight feels uncomfortable. Taurus is ruled by Venus which is soft while Leo is bold. However, both signs have a penchant for luxury; nice things but motivation is different. Taurus is a sensual sign and enjoys the feel of good sheets on their skin, the taste of a gourmet meal. Leo can be flashy with a need to impress others with stylish clothes or a fancy sports car. Taurus can help Leo to slow down and enjoy life’s simple pleasures while Leo can help Taurus from becoming too complacent of even lazy.
