The Sun in Cancer

The Sun ingressed into Cancer, the zodiac sign of The Crab, on June 22, 2026 at 4:25am EDT where it will remain until July 22 at 9:13pm EDT. The Sun enters Cancer at the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year. The sign of Cancer is ruled by the Moon and its element is Water. The vibe is gentle, nurturing and sensitive. People easily pick up on this vibe so individuals who have a lot of Cancer placements in their natal charts naturally attract people who need help. They are especially gifted at healing. Animals sense this about them too. Think about a cat who shuns everyone who comes into the house except that one person whose lap she jumps into. That is what Cancer feels like. The archetype of Cancer is The Great Mother. These are the people who put their arms around you and let you cry on their shoulders. And you feel better. Loving kindness radiates from Cancer.

Cancer is the Latin word for Crab and thinking about how a crab operates and survives gets us closer to understanding this fourth sign of the Zodiac. You may have heard that Cancer people are protective and defensive. Those characteristics are true but in astrology we seek to discover the underlying motivation; the evolutionary intent behind a personality trait. The deeper purpose of Cancer’s need to protect can be seen by studying the crab.

To me, and to lots of other people, the inside of a crab is pretty tasty. Seagull thinks so too. The crab has other predators, seals, otters and sharks! Without its shell the crab’s soft insides would be exposed and it could not survive. Protecting themselves is as necessary as the air they breathe. However, there are times in a crab’s life when it outgrows its shell and needs to find larger accommodations. The crab moves carefully, carefully into its new shell. The cover of darkness helps, with a little light from the Moon. Cancer’s sensitivity comes from an ability to sense danger which is crucial to its survival.

The crab is at home in its shell which is why Cancer correlates with home and family and your ancestral roots. Straying too far from home can make the crab a bit anxious. But in order to grow it has to take a risk. Maybe a career opportunity that will benefit your family presents itself. Plus, it’s your dream job. You will get paid more money for doing something that is well suited to your natural interests and talent. This job really appeals to you. The job you have now is boring, unfulfilling and barely pays the bills. You get excited thinking about how great it would be to spend your work day doing something you actually enjoy instead of watching the clock. The only excitement you experience is the end of your day as 5:00 rolls around. The catch? This dream job is across the country, 3,000 miles away. It means moving away from what is comfortable and familiar including your extended family. Your kids are upset about leaving their school and their friends. Your spouse tries to talk you out of it. Your parents who live two miles away aren’t getting any younger. It’s a tough and scary decision, especially for a Cancer person. If you have planets in Aries, Sagittarius, Capricorn or Aquarius, this decision is easier. Not so for the crab who has a hard time letting go of the past and who naturally puts the needs of other people before their own needs. It’s times like these when it helps Cancer to go inward and reflect. Getting away from all of the noise helps them tap into their intuition, focus on self-care and consider the bigger picture. Ultimately staying in a shell that is too small feels stifling and if you don’t take the job in California, you stay stuck in a soul-sucking job and your dissatisfaction infiltrates your entire life. The light goes out of you. Your spouse no longer feels connected to you and has an affair. Your kids treat you like you are invisible and the only relationship you have with your parents is driving them around to medical appointments where you sit reading old magazines in the waiting room not even talking to one another.

This story does not need to have such a sad a depressing ending. The evolutionary intent for Cancer is to not be afraid to be vulnerable in order to grow. Yes, Cancer needs its defenses. Protecting themselves and others is not a negative trait. It’s understanding when it is necessary to move into a bigger shell.

When and where to you need to protect and defend yourself and others? When and where do you need to be vulnerable in order to grow? In our natal charts we all have some Cancer energy. It may be a main ingredient or a more nuanced flavor. Even if you don’t have any planets in Cancer is probably sits on the cusp of a house. And we all have a Moon in our charts. I can help you tap into the Cancer parts of yourself. Just contact me for a reading. Here are just a few examples:

Cancer on the cusp of the second house? You protect your resources, including your finances. Being careful with money but now allowing money concerns to make all of your decisions is a life lesson.

Mars in Cancer? You will fiercely protect your home and family. You come to the rescue of others in dangerous situations. But above all you have the courage to follow your heart.

Venus in Cancer?  You desire relationships that last. Your ideal partner is someone who is loyal and seeks a life of domesticity. Devotion to family and enjoying quiet time at home brings contentment.

The Moon in the Fifth House? This Moon wants to be expressive and creative. Often, a playful quality and a love of children is present.

The Moon in Taurus? Our furry friends bring out your nurturing side. Staying grounded and living life simply and naturally brings happiness.

The Moon in Scorpio?  You tend to be edgy and seek out the truth, regardless of where that search may take you. You value honesty above all else and can smell a lie a mile away.

A footnote: The 4th of July is almost here. This year’s celebration of the 250th birthday of the United States of America happens when the Sun is in Cancer. Like people, countries have birthdays too – and natal charts. The branch of astrology known as Mundane Astrology deals with nations, governments and current events.

Here’s the chart of the USA with a brief interpretation of some of the major planetary placements:

The Sun sign of the USA is Cancer and it is placed in the seventh house. In the natal chart of a nation, the seventh house represents allies, foreign nations, open enemies and wars. The Natal chart of the USA has four planets residing in the seventh house. Mars in Gemini and The Sun, Venus and Jupiter in Cancer. This strong Cancer signature tells us something about the character of the United States. The signs of the zodiac indicate inner motivations and behaviors. With the Sun in Cancer the USA is motivated by the need to nurture, to protect and to care for. Priorities are the safety of its citizens, providing them with a secure home and family life and creating opportunities for people to flourish. These underlying motivations are the high road, the evolutionary path to strive for.

We see a strong sense of patriotism; a love for one’s country. When the USA goes to war the motivation is to protect our homeland, uphold our rights and to defend the principles that we stand for and believe in. There is a desire to support our allies and to come to the aid of those in need of healing, sustenance and protection from “The Bad Guys”. In this way, we see the United States in a mothering role, nurturing those less fortunate than ourselves, who are powerless and who are suffering. The positive expression of Cancer is to extend loving kindness to all people. Mars in Gemini represents the influence of the media and also indicates that the United States has a strong and passionate voice in international affairs.

The right to be a nation of free people is another strong signature in the natal chart of the USA.  The Moon is in the rebellious and noble minded sign of Aquarius. The evolutionary intent for Aquarius is to embrace individuation and freedom. The Moon of the USA lies in the third house of communication and that includes the media. As a country, the United States of America has something to say, and it is proclaimed loudly. The high value placed on freedom brings the USA together as a nation. We see the sense of patriotism through the Moon as well as through the Cancer placement because Aquarius rules groups of like-minded individuals who unite for a cause, for something bigger than themselves.

Another freedom loving sign is adventurous Sagittarius. Sagittarius represents the Rising Sign (or Ascendant) of the United States. In astrology, our Ascendant represents how we appear to others. It’s our social mask and is the placement that typically makes a first impression. The evolutionary intent of Sagittarius is to find meaning and purpose in life and that goal is accomplished is through the diversity of the population. When expressed well, The Sagittarian Ascendant of the USA realizes that the synergy created through embracing different cultures, religions and opinions makes us stronger and unites us as a nation.

I would love to hear your thoughts on the natal chart of the United States and would be glad to share them on my website, with your permission.
